Movable Type Help Needed
I've been using Movable Type for about a year and a half now. I started with Blogger, way back when, then moved on to MT from there. I tried Wordpress briefly--in fact, a yet-to-be-launched site I run uses Wordpress--but I keep coming back to MT. I'm no blogging genius, but I think I understand how MT works. I'm comfortable with it, at least as comfortable as I can be with a tool like this.
Having said all that, I need some help. There are a couple of issues I can't seem to resolve in MT, and I can't find the answers I need in the free support tools that Six Apart gives me access to. (I'm not complaining, by the way. I'm using MT for free, and I don't expect support to come with that package.)
Anyway, here are my questions:
- How do I use keywords/tags? I had been leaving these empty for the first year or so, but recently started filling in my "keyword" field when entering a post. Now, though, I'm not sure how to use the field and what format I should be using when I type things into it. Should the items in that field be separated by commas? Should phrases be in quotes? And how do I get these keywords/tags to show up in metadata for my posts? If you do a view source for this page, you won't find any keywords in the code, even though for this post I just added "MT, movable type, blogging, code, help" as the tags. I know adequate keywords can help with search engine rankings and help people find posts, so I want to use mine correctly. But I have no clue what I'm doing.
By the way, I've downloaded and installed just about every plugin I could find that plays with keywords/tags. But I'm not really using any of them, because I don't understand them. The ones I have installed (though mostly disabled) are: technoratitags-0.3/TechnoratiTags.pl, KeywordExtractor/keywordextractor.pl, keyvalues.pl, del.icio.usTags.pl, mt-tagslite Version 0.4. Should I be using any of these? Which should I keep, and how do I implement them?
- How do I get the comment display to show up in my RSS feed? I'm interested in having my comments link show up in my RSS feed. I think it's useful to people who use feedreaders but may want to check out a discussion about a post if one exists. For example, if you read one of my posts in a feedreader like Bloglines and see that there are fifteen comments with that post, you may want to click and see what everyone's talking about. But I can't figure out how to put the code in my feed to show how many comments each post has. I've seen other people do it, but stealing their code hasn't worked for me.
I'm sure this isn't as difficult as I'm making it. I just get confused sometimes. :) By the way, I recently switched my feed over to a Feedburner SmartFeed. Now, I use redirects and such to send everyone to one single feed that Feedburner hosts and tracks. Hopefully, I set it up correctly so that nobody missed a beat during the transition. But if you somehow lost your feed from my site, well, you're probably not reading this anyway. Sorry.
