Car Radio

Have you ever been in the car, flipping around the radio dial, and heard the same song on two radio stations at the same time? What about the same artist doing two different songs on two different stations at the same time? Neither of those is too unusual, but I've thought of something else that may be...

Have you ever flipped around and found the same song on THREE radio stations at once?

How about the same artist doing THREE different songs on THREE different stations at the same time?

I'm not sure such a thing could ever happen. It would require an artist with real crossover capabilities, since there are rarely more than two stations of a similar genre in one market. The artist in question would have to appear on pop radio, as well as easy listening and soft rock. Or adult contemporary and top 40, while also on alternative rock.

The only artists I can think of who may be able to do the "three different songs, three different stations" trick are people who've been around forever and crossed genres several times, like Elton John, Sting, or Rod Stewart. I could see "Crocodile Rock" playing on an oldies station while "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" plays on the soft rock channel and "Benny and the Jets" airs on adult contemporary. Or maybe "Maggie May" on classic rock, "Infatuation" on the adult contemporary and "Rhythm of My Heart" on light rock.

Maybe someone more contemporary who's a genre crosser like Faith Hill could pull off the "same song, three different stations" trifecta. I could see "Breathe" by Faith Hill airing on the pop rock, easy listening and country stations all at the same time.

Has anyone out there ever heard of this happening on their local stations? What songs or artists were involved?

Here's another one that I've never heard: a song playing on one station while its remake plays on another. It doesn't have the whole "three is the magic number" vibe to it, but it would still be weird...

how about jewel? she's doing the country thing but you could very well hear her songs on adult contemporary and the modern pop stations. I think I saw vanessa carlton doing the country thing as well.

I agree with you on the Faith pop/adult/country thing. Matter of fact, a lot of female country artists could do two: LeAnn Womack, with that awful "I Hope You Dance" song...

Another one to consider would be the Christian/pop/country thing, which that song "I Can Only Imagine" managed to do recently.

Just goes to show either how boring or genre-crossing popular country is. (I like country, I admit.)

No shame in liking country, Klug. I'm an occasional fan, myself. A good song is just a good song, despite the genre.

But yeah, I agree with you that modern popular country is sort of intentionally watered-down to be able to cross-pollinate. I suppose it's good business for people like Faith.
